German CIGS solar module manufacturer Avancis and Dutch equipment manufacturer Smit Thermal Solutions are teaming up with three European research institutes to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of CIGS solar technology. The Success project backed by the EU targets an efficiency of over 20 percent for industrially sized modules. This kind of efficiency has previously only been achieved on lab-scale cells.
Key to said high efficiency is a post-deposition treatment (PDT) of the absorber layer with heavy alkali metals. Working with research institutes Solliance (Eindhoven), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and CNRS Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel (Nantes), Smit and Avancis are going to study the impact of the alkali doping and PDT process in order to be able to replicate previous lab results on an industrial scale.
