After posting a slumping sales report, Signify has announced it is slashing 121 jobs from its Turnhout, Belgium factory. According to the Eindhoven-based illumination experts, formerly Philips Lighting, this cut in its workforce comes as a result of the dwindling conventional lighting market – as the traditional lamps produced in Turnhout are increasingly being replaced by state-of-the-art LED lamps.

Despite the shift in market trends, Signify still sees the Turnhout factory as an asset for its portfolio. While the overall market for conventional lighting is shrinking, there’s still a market for these systems in the greenhouse horticulture sector, among others. As such, the lighting experts plan to continue operations in the factory with the remaining 363 employees.
