German chancellor Angela Merkel wants the European Union to become more assertive technologically, which includes manufacturing chips on European soil. “I believe that chips should be manufactured in the European Union, that Europe should have its own hyperscalers and that it should be possible to produce battery cells,” she told the Financial Times last week. The beefed-up industrial policy is one of many proposals to “double down on Europe” in a grim geopolitical climate.
