Four Dutch universities in Shanghai Ranking top 100

Four Dutch universities held their position amongst the one hundred best universities in the world, according to the renowned Shanghai Ranking. American universities such as Harvard, Stanford and MIT dominate the top ten, as usual. Two British universities, Cambridge and Oxford, also made the top ten.

Utrecht University, at place 52, is the highest Dutch notation in the Academic World Ranking of Universities, as the list is officially called. The University of Groningen made number 69. Erasmus University Rotterdam and Leiden University are both ranked at 80. Delft University of Technology retains its place at 151-200. Eindhoven University of Technology drops from 301-400 to 401-500 and the University of Twente remains at 401-500.

The Shanghai Ranking creators base their ranking only on scientific criteria, such as the number of researchers and alumni from each university that won a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal. They also include the number of publications in the renowned science journals Science and Nature and the number of well-cited scientists. Educational criteria such as educational facilities and scores are ignored.
