TUE lifts student stop for three out of six programs

Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) is getting rid of the limitation on student influx for three out of six programs with numerus clausus: biomedical engineering, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering. For the remaining three programs, building sciences, computer science and industrial design, the maximum number of students will be increased. These changes will come into effect starting the academic year 2020-2021. The university is able to accept more students because it’s getting more money from the Dutch government.

Demand for highly educated engineers is very high, especially in the Brainport region. The TUE saw the student influx more than double over the past seven years, without governmental funding increasing. This barred the university from investing in personnel and facilities, resulting in numerus clausus for six programs. “The quality of education was at risk,” says rector Frank Baaijens. “We’re happy to be able to accept more new students now.” The new limits for building sciences, computer science and industrial design will be set in December.
