For the first time, Morris Chang has openly voiced support for US efforts to curtail China’s access to the most advanced semiconductor technology. “I certainly support that part of American industrial policy to slow down China’s progress,” the much-admired founder of TSMC said at an event organized by Taiwan’s Commonwealth Magazine, according to media reports.

Echoing comments from ASML CEO Peter Wennink, however, Chang warned of price hikes as a result of breaking up the industry’s global supply chain and reversal of globalization. “When the costs go up, the pervasiveness of chips will either stop or slow down considerably,” Reuters cites the 91-year-old. “We’re going to be in a different game.”
