In collaboration with the municipality, Dutch telecom operator T-Mobile is opening three new 5G research locations in The Hague: one in its local headquarters, one in The Hague Tech business hub and one in Scheveningen. These labs will serve to test 5G-based applications and to give the general public, schools and companies a taste of the possibilities. They’re also an important step in the partners’ joint ambition to make The Hague the first city in the Netherlands to have full 5G coverage in 2020.
This summer, the 5G Living Lab will open its doors in Scheveningen. With a focus on applicability, feasibility and sustainability, it will implement solutions to improve traffic management, safety and quality of life. From July onward, the 5G Field Lab at the T-Mobile HQ will offer schools and companies the opportunity to experiment with 5G applications. Special 5G antennas will be installed at these locations to enable the use of three different frequency bands: 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz (millimeter-wave). The third lab, at The Hague Tech’s Central Innovation District, will facilitate start-ups, scale-ups and more experienced companies to develop practical solutions for societal challenges.
5G roll-out will commence next year with the auction of the 700 MHz frequency band. The 3.5 GHz band is expected to follow at the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022. According to the European Commission, 26 GHz can be made available in the Netherlands already late next year.
