Marcel Levi takes the top seat at NWO

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has found its next leader. Marcel Levi will take the helm of the research organization starting 1 April 2021. Levi, currently the CEO of University College London Hospitals and a professor and clinical dean at the university, will replace outgoing chairman Stan Gielen, who’s retiring.

Levi studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam, where he became a doctor and received his PhD, and would later go on to become a professor of internal medicine. He currently holds several other positions in the academic world, including chair of the international scientific advisory board of the Dutch Heart Foundation and the Aids Fund. He’s also a member of the supervisory board of the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Center for Human Drug Research. He has already been involved in activities at NWO and is part of the evaluation committee of the Stevin Prize and chair of the cardiovascular IMDI (Innovative Medical Devices Initiative) committee.
