Globalfoundries and STMicroelectronics have finalized their deal to jointly operate a fab in Crolles, France. The facility will mostly focus on fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) technology, targeting automotive, industrial, IoT and 5G/6G communication infrastructure end-markets. The total investment adds up to 7.5 billion euros, part of which will be supplied by the French government. The European Commission signed off on the project last month, without clarifying how much state aid was allowed. The German government agreed to cover 40 percent of Intel’s investment in a leading-edge fab in Germany, although the processor maker is now pushing for more.
