Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger will meet with European Union officials next week, Reuters reports. The meeting will likely be about Gelsinger’s announcement, last month, to build another fab in Europe. He implied that it will be a greenfield investment, ie not an expansion of existing fabs in Ireland and Israel.

A week before Intel’s announcement, the European Commission presented the Digital Compass, a set of avenues, visions and targets shaping the bloc’s ambition towards “digital sovereignty” by 2030. One important pillar of the package is for Europe to become less dependent on others when it comes to key technologies. Among other things, the Digital Compass calls for 20 percent of the world’s leading-edge semiconductors to be manufactured in Europe by 2030.
