Systems design expert Demcon is adding another market sector to its belt. Aside from its work in high tech, smart industry and medical sectors, the technology developer has now created a new business unit devoted to the defense and security domain. The unit will be headed by John Manrho, who has 20 years of experience in the field of defense from his time at Fokker. Already, the Enschede-based company has announced a recent contract signing with the Defense Equipment Organization to further develop and potentially produce its first product called the E-lighter.

The E-lighter is a compact power generator that operates on the diesel fuel used in ordinary vehicle engines, with the goal of helping lighten the burden of military personnel in the field by removing the need for carrying several heavy backup batteries used for their electronic devices. The E-lighter itself was originally conceived as a “bottle with electricity” by Fokker Special Products, but has since been fully taken over by Demcon, which aims to further develop it into a high-quality product as it looks to automate the industrialized production of the device.

“We’re currently in the process of solving the last remaining issues,” comments Manrho. “The product’s capacity must be increased and its noise level must go down because the device must of course be quiet in the field. In addition, we’d like to be able to run the E-lighter on additional types of diesel.”
