Budget crisis endangers support for German fabs

Germany’s fab construction subsidies to Intel and a TSMC-led consortium that includes NXP have been called into question following a court ruling. “As things stand today, without the Climate and Transformation Fund, neither the site in Dresden nor the site in Magdeburg is guaranteed,” State Secretary Michael Kellner of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action told RND. Germany’s ruling coalition last week issued an emergency spending freeze following a ruling by the constitutional court that the reallocation of COVID funds to the Climate and Transformation Fund was unlawful. The political discussion about the effects of the ruling from Karlsruhe is still in full swing.
