Bavaria is in discussions with Intel to build a fab in the region, the state’s Minister of Economic Affair Hubert Aiwanger confirmed to Reuters. “The possible location of a large international semiconductor manufacturer in Bavaria is an outstanding opportunity. I strongly support this,” said Aiwanger.

Alongside Bavaria, Saxony is also vying for the chip plant. “We’re the number one semiconductor location in Europe,” Frank Bösenberg, managing director of the Silicon Saxony industry association, recently told Handelsblatt. “It would be difficult to find arguments against Saxony.”

Three months ago, Intel first offered to build more fabs in Europe, though that offer hinges on the European Union, national and regional governments supporting the endeavor financially.
